Samuel Untermyer, an immensely successful corporate lawyer known for his advocacy of human rights, sought to build “the finest garden in the world” and in 1915 commissioned William Welles Bosworth to design the gardens. Bosworth had just completed the Rockefeller gardens at Kykuit in Pocantico Hills, New York. The gardens were a source of great pride for Untermyer, who was an avid horticulturist. Maintained by 60 gardeners and supplied by 60 greenhouses, the Untermyer Gardens were hailed by the press in the 1920s as “America’s Most Spectacular Garden.” He wished to share his paradise with the public, and opened the doors to his estate on a weekly basis.
